songbird sings a new song like sunshine
bursting through the crack at the foot
of a basement cellar door
she welcomes the morning
as her wiggling toes consider the cool
of her hardwood floors
she remembers the murmur of time
beating on her back to keep moving
the bleeding pen in her pocket
songbird wraps her blue-stained sheets
around her shivering shoulders
while she hums her morning hymn
